Michael Olexa, a patient with terminal cancer whose marriage to Angela Sclafani was the subject of a Vows column in The New York Times on Sunday, died on Wednesday in Perth Amboy, N.J. He was 42.
The cause was colon cancer, his wife said.
The couple were married on Aug. 2 at the Knob Hill Golf Club in Manalapan, N.J., in a ceremony arranged by Wish Upon a Wedding, an organization that helps provide marriage ceremonies to people with fatal illnesses. The next day, Mr. Olexa was taken to the Raritan Bay Medical Center, where he later died.
Mr. Olexa and Ms. Sclafani began dating in January 2007. He learned he had cancer that fall. After it spread to his liver, he was told he had two to five years to live.
Mr. Olexa, a truck driver, lived in Perth Amboy all his life.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter from a previous marriage, Sarah Olexa; his parents, Rose Ann and Michael Olexa; and a sister, Melisa Lefkus.
